Search engines in the world: alternatives to Google

Many users are looking for alternatives to Google, often for reasons related to data and privacy. Here's the other search engines we find interesting and useful.

Google is confirmed to be the most used search engine, worldwide. Its popularity and success are largely due to its simple and intuitive interface, fast page loading, but mostly to the widest catalogue of Internet  pages in the world. Nonetheless, many users are looking for alternatives, also for reasons related to data and privacy.

DuckDuckGo, is visually similar to Google, but is actually very different from the Mountain View company in its structure. There are many options available to filter your search, starting from a feature that allows users to see all the results in only one page. Also available are features to disambiguate the results, for making the search as much accurate and complete as possible.
With regards to privacy, DuckDuckGo prides itself with a privacy policy that’s far away from Google’s one: they do not collect any personal information, nor they share it with or sell it to other companies. This characteristic makes targeted advertisement impossible on DuckDuckGo – for the joy of many users.

Baidu is currently the most used search engine in China. The big difference between the Chinese company and Google can be identified in the diverse way in which the two platforms work: Baidu’s technology has been built to process mainly Chinese queries and results. For a company that has yet to find its place in this market, it’s not going to be easy to get to a good positioning. Moreover, the first page result on Baidu is rich with ads and sponsored content, leaving little room for brands to find their spot organically.

54% of the online searches in Russia are on Yandex. The same company literally dominates the online advertisement market in the same country. CEO Arkady Volozh would like to remind that Yandex was found in 1997, a year before Google. Their core business consists of spotting markets in which their competitors are weak and building alternatives, for example in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Turkey. Just as much as Google does, Yandex offers many services, among which an email service, maps, music, videos and much more. It’s the best search engine for searches made in Russian.

Bing is Microsoft’s search engine. Launched in May 2009, in 2012 it successed to the point that it was the third most used search engine in the United States. Visually speaking, Bing’s home page is quite different from the others: every single day the background image changes and the user can change it him/herself. Bing also offers search options for images and videos, maps, news and much more. According to a recent survey, it has the 8.82% of the global market.

Even though YouTube cannot be properly defined as a search engine, it processes more than 3 billion searches a month. With 1 billion unique visitors a month, 400 hours of video uploaded every minute and a relevant reach to the 18-34 audience, mostly but not exclusively in the US, YouTube offers huge opportunities to many brands and companies, above all for those interested in reaching young users with tutorials, DIY, how to and/or inspirational content.

When it comes to product search, Google has a huge and scary competitor: Amazon. According to a survey, 38% of users looking for products to buy online start their search on Amazon, without browsing other websites or search engines first. Another, more recent survey, highlighted how more than 26% of users using Amazon open the app or the website while in a retail store, to compare different prices and offers.
